About Us

Our membership is open to all who wish to learn more about the History of Art.

Founded in 1981 as the University of London Extra-Mural History of Art Society (ULEMHAS), we were predominantly a society of Birkbeck art history students. In 2015 we changed our name to The London Art History Society. We continue to have close links with Birkbeck and are affiliated to their History of Art Society. This is reflected in the academic quality of our events.

We provide good quality, affordable art history education in a friendly, sociable atmosphere. The Society is run by volunteers who take responsibility for planning and organising the events, and has grown to involve over 300 enthusiasts.

We are a not-for-profit organisation with low overheads providing excellent value for money. Any profits from our activities are donated to selected art institutions for specific purposes. This could be to restore an art work or support an education project.

Members may also obtain access to Birkbeck Library on the same basis as alumni.
